Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid grab important 3-1 win against Sociedad

Real Madrid have earned themselves a key win today as Los Merengues triumphed 3-1 against Real Sociedad away from home, without Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo.

This fixture was quite an important one. Real Madrid, who had already disappointed in the past couple of weeks, with draws against Levante and Valencia, needed this win in order to come back in the title race and to increase their hopes of catching up to FC Barcelona, who had maintained a splendid record this season. Real Madrid started the game with the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos, and victory was far from certain at this point.

Real Madrid’s first goal would come from a long cross to Sergio Ramos. The defender, placed into the box for this set piece, would control the ball and try to perform a bicycle kick, but his failure to control the ball properly would lead to another player to get the ball. Borja Mayoral would latch onto the rebound, and fire a powerful shot in the back of the net, earning his first Real Madrid goal and giving the lead to the visitors, nineteen minutes into the game.

It wouldn’t be long before Real Sociedad would catch up. Álvaro Odriozola received a pass on the right wing, and took a couple of touches down the line before launching a powerful cross that would go down all the way to Kévin Rodrigues. Sociedad’s left back (touted as Yuri Berchiche’s replacement this season) would fire a powerful volley that would initially be saved by Keylor Navas, before the ball slipped through his hands and all the way to the back of the net.

However, Real Madrid would make the best out of their next chance. Casemiro, who has been considered one of Real Madrid’s best players this year, gave a near-perfect through ball to Borja Mayoral down the right side of the pitch. The Spaniard would control the ball, before eliminating a Sociedad defender and passing the ball back inside. His pass would be intercepted, and redirected into the back of the net by Kévin Rodrigues, the unlucky left-back who had scored earlier in the game.

The final goal of the game would be a typical Gareth Bale goal. Isco, another one of Real Madrid’s talented playmakers, would setup the Welshman with an amazing through ball over the defence. The Welsh speedster would make an amazing run, overtaking the rest of Real Sociedad’s defence, before taking one touch and lobbing the goalkeeper and scoring in a pure demonstration of flair and finishing. The game would result in a 3-1 win for Real Madrid, who would now climb up to 4th place, chasing Sociedad (3rd), Sevilla (2nd) and Barcelona (1st).
