Sergi Roberto discusses his future at Barcelona

Sergi Roberto has been linked with multiple English outlets, with Manchester United and Chelsea being rumored to have shown interest in the Spanish midfielder. The most recent star to have come from the Masia was in fact expected to leave the Catalan club by the end of the summer; however, it seems as though the change of circumstances regarding the Barcelona lineup could mean a potential starter status for Roberto. Something that may have convinced him to stay.

Following Barça’s most recent outing against Betis yesterday, Sergi Roberto has revealed that he sees his future nowhere other than in Spain; most especially in Barcelona. The Spaniard told Marca how he felt about his status in the team following their victory to open their Liga campaign, where he scored. “I started at the Bernabeu, the coach gives me confidence and I scored, and I want to continue being an important player”. The player has also stated he is now happy at the club due to the role he has now been given under Valverde. Sergi Roberto played most of last season filling as a right-back for Barcelona, but the signing of Nelson Sémedo meant that he would either find his place on the bench, or in the midfield. And luckily for him, he was selected to start in the return game of the Supercup as well as the opening La Liga fixture against Betis.

“During the pre-season I did not start much but now in the official matches, I am playing more. I am as happy as I was in Madrid on a personal level. I felt comfortable and I played in my normal position.” The Spanish international is now 25 and cannot afford to make any bad decisions for his career. However, considering the playing time he has been given in official matches with Barça, things should definitely look better and brighter in the future for Roberto, who concluded by ruling out a move outside of Spain and therefore closing the door on a possible exit to Manchester United or Chelsea, two of the known contenders for his signing at the beginning of the summer transfer window.
